The Background
At the turn of the Century Boeing Aircraft decided to update the 737-800 with the latest in Technology. One of the updates pertained to the passenger experience. Boeing had decided that the Aircraft’s lighting would be completely LED’s. LEDs not only provide better light but does it at lower power consumption and with greater life expectancy.
The Engineering
Boeing Aircraft selected Adept to be one of the team members for the reengineering of the Passenger Service Unit (PSU). As a member of the team, Adept was tasked with the Engineering and development of the Reading light and the illuminated No Smoking Sign. Adept developed both the LED Reading Light and LED No Smoking Sign.
- LED Driver Engineering
- Thermal Heat Transfer Engineering
- Optical Lens Engineering
- Injection Molded Component Design, including Optics
- No Fastener Assembly Design
- Heat Sink Engineering and Design for Manufacture
- Engineering per Boeing Aircraft and FAA requirements for flight Aircraft
The Results
The prototype and production LED Reading Light and No Smoking Light exceeded requirements with Higher overall Power Efficiency and Lighting Performance. The LED Reading Light and NO Smoking design was released ahead of schedule and the final release of the PSU meeting all of Boeing Aircraft’s Requirements. The LED Reading Light and No Smoking Sign can be found on all Boeing 737-800 Aircraft with a “Sky Interior”.
